The Spiritual Significance of Govardhan
According to Hindu scriptures, the people of Braj once worshipped Lord Indra, the god of rain. Lord Krishna encouraged them to worship Govardhan Hill instead, as it provided them with food, shelter, and sustenance.
Angered by this, Indra unleashed torrential rains upon Braj. To protect the villagers, Lord Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill on his little finger and held it aloft for seven days and seven nights, providing shelter to the people and cattle.
This divine event is celebrated as one of the most important leelas of Lord Krishna and symbolizes faith, humility, and divine protection.
